Mission Arts and Crafts is the marriage of two of two similar aesthetics that emerged throughout the 1800s and is still popular today. Often you hear people describe furniture of this era as Craftsman, Arts and Crafts, and Mission. Below you can read more about Mission, Arts and Crafts, as well as check out some items currently on our showroom!
According to Wiki, "Mission furniture is a style of furniture that originated in the late 19th Century. It traces its origins to a chair made by A.J. Forbes around 1894 for San Francisco's Swedenborgian Church (San Francisco, California). The term mission furniture was first popularized by Joseph P. McHugh of New York, a furniture manufacturer and retailer who copied these chairs and offered a line of stylistically related furnishings by 1898. The word mission references the Spanish missions throughout colonial California, though the design of most Mission Style furniture owed little to the original furnishings of these missions. The style became increasingly popular following the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901. The style was popularly associated with the American Arts and Crafts movement."
New Mission Workshop explains, "Arts and Crafts style began in England, Australia, America and Canada between 1880 and 1910 as a backlash response to the industrial revolution of the time. It was instigated in the 1860s by artist/write William Morris, who created the “Morris Chair” we still have with us today. The backlash was by artisans fighting back against “soul-less” mass-produced items from large factories. Also, it was a backlash against lavish ornamentation of the Victorian age. They were in favor of the master craftsman, who created all the parts of an item and assembled and finished it, with help from apprentices. This is in contrast to manufacturing plants, whose goal it was to turn out the most pieces possible." Read more on their blog here.
Since we moved into our new location, our Mission Arts and Crafts showroom has expanded quite a bit. Our showrooms are stocked with a large selection of Stickley, Limbert, and other classic Arts and Crafts designs. Stop by this weekend and see what we have in store for you!
This 1950s Robert Heritage credenza is nothing like you've ever seen. This amazing piece is constructed of solid Rosewood and is in it's original finish. Let the simple design and striking wood patterns decorate your living room, office, or dining room.
According to Pomono.com, "British industrial and interior designer Robert Heritage is celebrated as the most awarded designer in the history of the British Design Council. Known for his wide breadth of work, which encompasses furniture, interiors, lighting, and accessories, he is regularly associated with important 20th-century British designers and architects by the likes of Robin & Lucienne Day, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Barber & Osgerby."

Over the last few months, we've expanded our inventory to include a wider range of home accessories. If you've been by the shop, as of late, you might notice the beautiful works of Hanna Traynham.
Hanna is a ceramicist and a high school art teacher. When she's not teaching you can find her at her studio, Turning Earth Studios, making unique, stunning ceramics.
According to her website, "Hanna pushes the limits of the material, piercing her wheel thrown forms with careful attention to how the piece may alter under the high heat of the firing. Often her work will slump, acquiring an entirely organic movement that occurs only by nature." Just look at these incredible designs.
If you're looking for a new home accessory that stands out, make sure to stop by our store and check out the lovely ceramic work of Hanna Traynham!

We're always thrilled to find a Milo Baughman piece, and we knew we found a gem when we came across this beauty.
According to Wikipedia, "Milo Ray Baughman, Jr., born in Goodland, Kansas on October 7, 1923, was a modern furniture designer. His American designs were forward-thinking and distinctive, yet unpretentious and affordable. Contemporary furniture designers and dealers continue to copy, reinvent, and revive his work in the new and secondary decorative arts markets."
"Baughman designed for a number of furniture companies starting in the mid-1940s until his death, including Mode Furniture, Glenn of California, The Inco Company, Pacific Iron, Murray Furniture of Winchendon, Arch Gordon, Design Institute America, George Kovacs, Directional, Henredon and Drexel, among others. He is most famous, however, for his longtime association with Thayer Coggin Inc., of High Point, NC, which began in 1953 and lasted until his death in 2003."

Recently we’ve brought on some exciting new partnerships to help enhance your shopping experience. One of the biggest expansions to our store is the introduction of Gus* Modern! We’re happy to be partnering up with a company that believes quality and style go hand in hand!
We were thrilled to be scouted by Gus*. When they approached us earlier this year, we felt their items were a good match for our store, and we were eager to move forward. After a lot of phone calls, emails, and a quick flight to North Carolina, we had landed a great deal with a great company.
Gus* Design Group is a furniture design and manufacturing company based in Toronto, Canada. The company was started by some like-minded friends who shared a passion for design, and had a vision to create an exclusive line of modern furniture that would continue Mid-century traditions, emphasizing originality, functionality, simplicity, and a focus on materials and craftsmanship. Today, the in-stock Gus* Modern Collection includes upholstery, beds, dining, storage, lighting, and accents, and is available at authorized furniture showrooms worldwide. Gus* has become a favorite choice of interior designers, architects, and design-minded consumers.
The new inventory arrived this week! We’re slowly getting items out on the showroom, so be sure to stop by the store this weekend, and have a look at all the new inventory! You can also shop more Gus* Modern products here.

Our store is constantly evolving. Now that we are finally starting to settle into our new space, we want to let you know about another of the new partnerships that has come our way.
Currently in the store we have a wide selection of local art. One of our newest additions is the work of Tessa Heck. She has her MFA in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art and her work is incredible. If you're looking for a medium to large scale pieces with a cool color palette mixed with abstract design, you're in luck! Our showroom has some great works up. See some of the pieces below that are in store now. If you get a sec, hop over to her website and see her recent work for Wildfang and Boys Club! It's pretty rad!
Now that we have a new space, we wanted to add some new partnerships to the repertoire. One of the first new partnerships is with L+R Design Lab. MC Lemay and Allie Rivenbark have an impressive background in design, welding, and woodwork. They specialize in furniture, home accessories, art, and photography. Their designs provide a modern, rustic look that combines mid-century furniture with wood and metal work. The clean craftsmanship behind their all original items is incredible, and provides a versatile piece of furniture that will compliment any home, office, or commercial space. You may have seen L+R display cases around town in places like Jacobsen Salt and Bee Local Honey.
We are thrilled about this new partnership and hope you take a chance to look at their website or pop by our store, at our new location, and have a look at what these talented people are doing!
The new store is conveniently located on SE 7th and SE Clay near the Ladd’s Addition neighborhood. The public is invited to visit the soft opening, on Monday, May 1st.
After creating a successful brick-and-mortar store in Portland’s Central Eastside Industrial District, the owners, Mike and Kelly Albino, have decided to move to a new space that caters more to them and their customers. "We have been given a wonderful opportunity to upgrade our showrooms and offer high-quality curated goods from all over the globe," says store owner, Mike Albino. "But we will miss the grassroots community of business people and ideas that have become part of the fabric of who we are."
The new space will offer a finished look that will allow merchandise to be presented more professionally while creating an improved shopping experience for all. It comes complete with bi-level display floors, heat and air throughout the store, and restrooms for shoppers. Also, more street parking will be available at the new location, allowing customers to park easily while on the hunt for their next credenza.
On the horizon, Legacy Modern will be partnering with several local artists and new companies to add to their inventory. Legacy will become a more complete home furnishings and design showroom, allowing customers to not only furnish their space, but to design it with their new home accessories.
There will be a soft open on May 1st and Grand Opening opening news is coming soon. Stay tuned to our website and social media for all the details.
According to Eye of the Day, "olive oil jars are one of the classics of Greek pottery design and is still used as storage, especially in Greek homes to store the family olive oil. In ancient Minoan culture, both liquids and cereals were stored in these large terra cotta pots, but they were also used as low-tech air conditioners by filling them with water in hot weather which would then evaporate, causing a cooling effect."
See decorating ideas below.
*Note: We have comparable pots in store*
With our Moving Sale in motion, you can save 50% on these beautiful olive oil jars.
