Saarinen designed one of the most iconic, and comfortable, chairs of the modern furniture movement, as shown below in cobalt blue, with an ottoman.

Like many of Saarinen’s furniture designs, the Womb Chair required production techniques and materials still in the infancy of their existence. Saarinen and Florence Knoll found a boat builder in New Jersey who was experimenting with fiberglass and resin to help develop manufacturing methods for the new chair. Florence Knoll: “He was very skeptical. We just begged him. I guess we were so young and so enthusiastic he finally gave in and worked with us. We had lots of problems and failures until they finally got a chair that would work.” (via Knoll)

Art is magic and the world without it would be a dreary place.

Same goes for vintage goods and antiques.

There is nothing wrong with contemporary art and furniture, don’t misunderstand us. We buy new and old because they balance eachother out nicely and keep things interesting and fresh.

Everything all sparkly and new looks like a furniture showroom. Your home needs to feel like you and reflect who you are and where you have been.

Ways to bring interest and style to your home:

  • Personal, framed pictures of family, friends, pets.

  • Kid’s Art - you’d be amazed how wonderful uninhibited art by children can be. It validates children’s creativity, and adds a personal note of notalgia.

  • Family heirlooms - whether it is furniture, art, textiles…it can be brought into the present with a more contemporary fabric, a new frame or reinvented as artwork or a decorative pillow. There are countless ways to add elements of your family’s history that make it indistinguishably your home.

  • Original and reproduction art that brings you joy and adds color, texture, mood to your home.

Of course LEGACY MODERN has a an ever rotating collection of European as well as domestic antiques and art.

We shop for interesting items abroad that add something exotic or rare to the American home. And some of the greatest furniture makers come from Europe, but also from California!
